On Jan. 5, 2009, the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) announced yet another chiropractic demonstration project. Haven’t we been there before? Isn’t this the third demonstration project? Why a demonstration project after full facts, research and empirical evidence indicate that chiropractic works and is already a fixture of the public health delivery system in the United States? Isn’t it time we were included as a permanent part of the National Health Service Corps?

What More Do We Need to Prove?

For more than 100 years, chiropractors have raised awareness of musculoskeletal and structural issues impacting the health of our society. The chiropractic profession has made valiant efforts to join with our communities to actively support public health programs. As professional health care providers, chiropractors promote the impact of structure on health, prevention and wellness.

Melanin Production and Tobacco Use, Dependence, and Exposure

By |May 9, 2009|News, Research|

The June 2009 issue of Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior includes a study looking at a link between melanin production as a result of UV exposure and tobacco use in African Americans. Although the findings established a correlation, repeated studies are needed to verify their results. They go on to hypothesize that this correlation may be responsible for the stronger addiction to tobacco use that has been previously noted in darker skinned individuals. From the abstract;

Link between facultative melanin and tobacco use among African Americans
Gary King, Valerie B. Yerger, Guy-Lucien Whembolua, Robert B. Bendel, Rick Kittles, Eric T. Moolchan

“The results of this analysis support the hypothesis of a positive association between melanin levels and tobacco use, dependence, and exposure among African American smokers.”

Are You Too Young To Supplement?

The whole point of nutritional supplementation should be about prevention, not reproducing the medical model of symptom treatment after the fact.

A new study involving 5,201 female U.S. Navy recruits puts this into clear perspective.

Half this group was given calcium and vitamin D supplementation during basic training, and the amazing result was a reduction of 25% in stress fractures. Considering that 21% of recruits usually experience a stress fracture, this was a big deal for the Navy.

Consider this: the average cost of a single soldier’s being discharged from basic training is estimated to be $34,000. By that standard alone, this study saved the Navy about 2.5 million dollars by reducing the discharge rate by 25%.

The Treatment of Radicular Pain (Radiculopathy)

The Treatment of Radicular Pain (Radiculopathy)

The Chiro.Org Blog

The difference between the chiropractic and the medical approaches to health care is never more clear than with the treatment of Radiculopathy.

The medical approach entails their version of “conservative” treatment (such as physical therapy, medications, and selective spinal injections) for six to eight weeks. Then, if their conservative treatment does not alleviate the pain, decompressive surgery, such as laminectomy and/or discectomy/microdiscectomy, may be recommended.

Chiropractors aptly describe radiculopathy as “nerve root irritation”, and the chiropractic approach for resolution is straightforward. If you have a rock in your shoe, and your foot hurts…. do you need physical therapy, medications, or spinal injections? NO!!!

You need your doctor (who is supposed to be the Sherlock Holmes of illness) to determine the CAUSE of the nerve root irritation (the rock), and to remove that obstacle from your path, so you can return to health.
