A new article, published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine [1] reports on interviews with 31,044 individuals who used CAM for low back pain. The results are quite fascinating:

  • The top 6 CAM therapies for LBP, starting with the most-used approaches are: chiropractic, massage, herbal therapy, acupuncture, yoga/tai chi/qi gong, and relaxation techniques.
  • Chiropractic use (76% of respondents) was larger than all the other 5 therapies combined (see Figure 1)
  • Chiropractic users scored their satisfaction (and clinical benefits) the highest of all 6 approaches (see Table 2).This reconfirms earlier findings from the Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation 2005, which reported that:SMT provided the greatest pain relief [7.33], scoring higher than:nerve blocks (6.75),
    Opioid analgesics (6.37),
    muscle relaxants (5.78),
    Acupuncture (5.29), or
    NSAIDs (5.22) . [2]

House Passes Bill to Expand Chiropractic Care to All Major VA Medical Centers

By |May 27, 2010|News|

SOURCE: American Chiropractic Association ~ May 24, 2010

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1017, the ‘‘Chiropractic Care Available to All Veterans Act,’’ tonight, putting America’s veterans one step closer to gaining access to chiropractic care at all major Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers. The bill was approved 365:6.

H.R. 1017 requires the VA to have doctors of chiropractic on staff at no fewer than 75 major VA medical centers before the end of 2011 and for all major VA medical centers to have a doctor of chiropractic on staff before the end of 2013. There are nearly 160 VA treatment facilities nationwide. Currently, the VA provides chiropractic care at 32 treatment facilities across the country. (more…)

The General Chiropractic Council is the body charged with regulating and developing chiropractic in the United Kingdom. This guidance document is partly in response to the British Chiropractic Association’s litigation with science writer Simon Singh.

GUIDANCE ON CLAIMS MADE FOR THE CHIROPRACTIC VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION COMPLEX

The chiropractic vertebral subluxation complex is an historical concept but it remains a theoretical model. It is not supported by any clinical research evidence that would allow claims to be made that it is the cause of disease or health concerns.

Chiropractors are reminded that

  • they must make sure their own beliefs and values do not prejudice the patients’ care (GCC Code of Practice section A3)
  • they must provide evidence based care, which is clinical practice that incorporates the best available evidence from research, the preferences of the patient and the expertise of practitioners, including the individual chiropractor her/himself (GCC Standard of Proficiency section A2.3 and the glossary)
  • any advertised claims for chiropractic care must be based only on best research of the highest standard (GCC Guidance on Advertising issued March 2010)

MMR Doctor Struck From Register

By |May 24, 2010|News|

Source BBC News

The doctor who first suggested a link between MMR vaccinations and autism is to be struck off the medical register.

The General Medical Council found Dr Andrew Wakefield guilty of serious professional misconduct over the way he carried out his controversial research. It follows a GMC ruling earlier this year that he had acted unethically. Dr Wakefield, who is now based in the US, has consistently claimed the allegations are unfair. He now says he will appeal against the verdict.

His 1998 Lancet study caused vaccination rates to plummet, resulting in a rise in measles – but the findings were later discredited. The GMC ruled in January Dr Wakefield had acted “dishonestly and irresponsibly” in conducting his research, but under its procedures the sanctions are made at a later date. The case did not investigate whether Dr Wakefield’s findings were right or wrong, instead it focused on the methods of research. (more…)

PH&W HEALTH: Top Secret

There are a few things that you may not know about D.C.’s, which surprised us, included the mounting research.

1.   Their education is equal to their medical colleagues …
and might be better in some areas.
[1]
This might be difficult to accept, but chiropractic students spend markedly more hours in the classroom than medical students, especially in the areas of anatomy, physiology, orthopedics, and x-ray. [2] Of course, their training is different since “Chiros” concentrate on muscles, bones, joints, and nerves. Their education only touches on medication, emergency situations, etc. Many are beginning to think this gives them a better background in physical rehab. (more…)

By NICHOLAS D. KRISTOF

The President’s Cancer Panel is the Mount Everest of the medical mainstream, so it is astonishing to learn that it is poised to join ranks with the organic food movement and declare: chemicals threaten our bodies.

The cancer panel is releasing a landmark 200-page report on Thursday, warning that our lackadaisical approach to regulation may have far-reaching consequences for our health. (more…)
