Chiropractic for the Treatment and Prevention of Sports Injuries
SOURCE: ChiroAccess
Chiropractors have a longstanding history of treating musculoskeletal sports injuries. There have been few research studies that document the value of chiropractic treatment for sports injuries and nearly no research that has looked at providing evidence that chiropractic care can play a role in preventing those injuries. The void and need for research supporting the role of chiropractic in sports injury prevention makes a randomized clinical trial (RCT) published last week (8 April, 2010) an important contribution to the literature. As the Team Chiropractor for the Blackthorn Mens Rugby Club, I’ve worked on numerous athletes over the years. Chiropractic has helped in the improvement of their injuries, as well as the overall improvement of their performance on the rugby pitch.

Thank you for your well written and interesting post.
[…] great post today on Chiro.org, visits a recent study that showed a trend in injury prevention to athletes under chiropractic […]
Great post! Well written and informative. Chiropractic is a big part of sports performance now, both on a professional and amateur level. I’m happy to be a part of it!
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. This the kind of studies that we can use to educate the public about the benefit of chiropractic, not only as to treat aches and pains but also as a preventive measure.
Would you allow a guest blog post about chiropractic information on your site?
Certainly, pending editorial approval.
As with Richmond, please check out my site and I’d love to contribute. Here’s a post I did on being a sports chiropractor. Great resource site, just stumbled on it for the first time.
PN Trainimg is a fantastic adjunct to anyone training for anything. Professional, rec, and any other inbetweeners. Great points..
We welcome submissions to enhance the website. It should be evident from our existing content that the site is about providing valuable info for the profession. This is a doctors info site, and that’s the standard we hold to. It’s not a patient info, or an ask-the-doc site. Just submit your materials to one of us and we’ll all review it. Remember, we are all volunteers here, same as you!
That is the first time reading that article. Great stuff. Shows how chiropractors do not only affect the spine but extremities as well “A significant difference in weeks missed due to non-contact knee injury was noted”. That is fantastic! Chiropractors should be available to every sports team.
In my view, most people view chiropractors as “plain vanilla” practitioners all practicing much the same way. If more chiropractors specialize in sports medicine, chiropractic neurology, or other chiropractic specialties, this would be likely to raise our overall reputation and ability to help others.

What post-grad training would you recommend? I took LACC’s 3-year rehabilitation diplomate program, and Dr. Craig Liebenson continues to offer advanced-level training here and in Europe.
Then, how do you propose to let the public know about your specialty training? Just curious.
It’s great to see studies like this in the literature. These articles specifically help us to reach the ever-growing athletic population from the weekend warrior to the seasoned professional. I am a chiropractor and a runner, so I have a passion for treating and preventing sports injuries both professionally and personally. In an article I wrote called “Running and Back Pain”, one of the recommendations I make is stretching of the hamstrings. Thanks for validating my advice with scientific proof!
I am appreciative that we can access articles like this online, remember the hassle and cost of getting a copy article?
Injuries happen. In all likelihood if you participate in any physical activity long enough, you will eventually get hurt to some degree. The way in which you treat your injuries determines how fast you will recover and get back to the activity you enjoy.
Chiropractic adjustments, goal setting, perseverance and nutrition all play a role in helping you recover from an injury and getting back to where you can perform optimally.
