Short Story: My first experience at a chiropractic session

Manasseh Azure Awuni, a Level 400 student of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, writes about her first chiropractic experience in Ghana.

It is one of the names you hear and if you have not consulted your dictionary, you do not have the faintest idea what it looks like. I had heard the word Chiropractic and Wellness Centres not long ago and my imagination about it was not different from how I perceived the word “internet” when I was leaving Kete-Krachi for Accra four years ago.

As I walked into the Asylum Down (Prestige Centre) of the Chiropractic and Wellness Centres, that Monday evening, not only did I not know the meaning of chiropractic but I also did not know the right pronunciation of the first syllable of the word. I didn’t know that the first syllable of the word, which starts like children is pronounced like the capital of Egypt. The conclusion I drew was that Chiropractic and Wellness Centres were unknown because I thought I was current enough to know the current happenings in town. I was however proven wrong when I entered after receiving a VIP treatment at the entrance. GUIDANCE ON CLAIMS MADE FOR THE CHIROPRACTIC VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION COMPLEX

The chiropractic vertebral subluxation complex is an historical concept but it remains a theoretical model. It is not supported by any clinical research evidence that would allow claims to be made that it is the cause of disease or health concerns.

Chiropractors are reminded that

they must make sure their own beliefs and values do not prejudice the patients’ care (GCC Code of Practice section A3)
they must provide evidence based care, which is clinical practice that incorporates the best available evidence from research, the preferences of the patient and the expertise of practitioners, including the individual chiropractor her/himself (GCC Standard of Proficiency section A2.3 and the glossary)
any advertised claims for chiropractic care must be based only on best research of the highest standard (GCC Guidance on Advertising issued March 2010)

MMR Doctor Struck From Register

The doctor who first suggested a link between MMR vaccinations and autism is to be struck off the medical register.

The General Medical Council found Dr Andrew Wakefield guilty of serious professional misconduct over the way he carried out his controversial research. It follows a GMC ruling earlier this year that he had acted unethically. Dr Wakefield, who is now based in the US, has consistently claimed the allegations are unfair. He now says he will appeal against the verdict.

His 1998 Lancet study caused vaccination rates to plummet, resulting in a rise in measles – but the findings were later discredited. The GMC ruled in January Dr Wakefield had acted “dishonestly and irresponsibly” in conducting his research, but under its procedures the sanctions are made at a later date. The case did not investigate whether Dr Wakefield’s findings were right or wrong, instead it focused on the methods of research. (more…)

Tiger Woods Flunks Chiropractic 101

His chiropractic/diagnostic skills are about as good as his golf game these days.

The man who left us with a self-diagnosed “bulging disc” in his neck last Sunday, the man who has become his own pain in the neck, has exactly that.

Woods said on Wednesday that tests showed an inflamed neck joint that causes pain and makes it hard to turn his head. This latest Tiger trauma will require little more than medicine, massage, and rest.

There were no tests conducted on his inflamed scorecards from his past two tournament.

Woods withdrew from the Player’s Championship Sunday after seven holes.

Do health care professionals perform hand hygiene? UI has an app for that

The availability of the free application on May 5 at the iTunes store coincides with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) “5 Moments for Hand Hygiene” campaign. The campaign, which is part of the WHO’s “Save Lives: Clean Your Hands” annual initiative, spells out the standard opportunities for health care workers to practice hand hygiene.

“iScrub simplifies the time-consuming and error-prone process of recording observations, analyzing the data, and feeding results back to health care professionals and managers,” said Philip Polgreen, M.D., one of the application’s developers and an assistant professor of internal medicine at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine.

Doctors of Chiropractic and Patients Included in UnitedHealth Group Settlement

A record-breaking settlement has been reached between the American Medical Association, et al. and UnitedHealth Group—the nation’s largest health insurer— for 15 years of artificially low payments for out-of-network services. More than $350 million has been allocated to compensate impacted providers and subscribers, including doctors of chiropractic and their patients, according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA).

Affected providers and subscribers should have received mailings from UnitedHealth Group that include an overview of the settlement, instructions for filing a claim for payment and proof of claim forms. Claims for payment must be filed by Oct. 5, 2010. Anyone filing objections to the settlement or opting out of the settlement must do so by July 27, 2010.
