Majority of Alabama Chiropractors Favor Limited Prescription Rights

The Alabama State Chiropractic Association (ASCA) conducted a survey of member practitioners in 2010 regarding the scope of practice in Alabama. Overall, results indicated that a majority of surveyed chiropractors are in favor of the inclusion of injectable vitamins and nutrients and prescriptive rights in the scope of practice…

Within the group of 255 respondents, 63 percent percent agreed or strongly agreed that chiropractic is a drugless alternative to allopathic medical care, and the same proportion of respondents felt that chiropractic is the detection and correction of subluxations. Seventy-six percent agreed that subluxation is an important cause of disease and correction can restore health.

However, 41 percent responded that the chiropractic profession should abandon the term subluxation and focus on a broader scope of practice in general. A majority were also in favor of chiropractors utilizing injectable vitamins and nutrients (58 percent), as well as prescriptions of certain drugs (60 percent). (more…)

Congress Moves to Expand Chiropractic Services to Veterans and Military Beneficiaries

Chiropractic Profession Urged to Enlist Support from Local Members of Congress

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) and the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC) today expressed support for newly introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives designed to expand the availability of the services delivered by chiropractic physicians in the federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and to those who utilize the military’s health care delivery system, TRICARE, run by the Department of Defense (DoD).

Ranking member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif.), has again introduced the Chiropractic Care to All Veterans Act (H.R. 329), a bill similar to legislation that was overwhelmingly passed by the entire House in 2010 but was not considered in the Senate. H.R. 329 would require the VA to have a chiropractic physician on staff at all major VA medical facilities by 2014. It would also amend the current statute, the Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Programs Enhancement Act of 2001, ensuring that chiropractic benefits are included in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations and therefore, cannot be denied. AECC partners with Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College

Postgraduate students at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College (CMCC) are enrolling on the AECC’s Master of Science Advanced Professional Practice (Clinical Sciences) following a unique agreement forged between the two institutions.

Canadian-based students entering the three-year programme have access to a CMCC Research Supervisor and also benefit from being able to speak directly to AECC tutors during their studies.

The Clinical Sciences programme is one of eleven MSc courses currently delivered at the AECC and it is possible that further courses could be entered onto by CMCC students in the future. Both the AECC and CMCC are delighted at being able to forge a collaborative form of study.

“We’re very excited about this program because it finally offers the opportunity for more chiropractors to access postgraduate education,” says Dr. Paula Stern, Director of Graduate Studies at CMCC. “As well as being available on a part time basis, there is flexibility to the program. As a professional Masters, it allows individuals to choose courses of interest. A candidate may choose to focus on a variety of topics such as geriatrics, chronic pain or disability.” (more…)
